✦ The 12 Animals

The Chinese zodiac cycles through twelve animals — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig — one animal per year, repeating every twelve years. The animal represents the core personality, temperament, and instinctive nature of everyone born under it. It's the "who you are at your core" layer.

At the world level, each animal year carries a distinct collective mood. Rat years tend to favor commerce and clever strategy. Dragon years bring ambition and spectacle. Tiger years produce bold action and upheaval. Pig years invite abundance and rest. Events tend to carry the flavor of the ruling animal.

◈ The Year Element

Layered on top of the animal is a five-element cycle — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — each lasting two years (one Yang, one Yin). This is the year element, and it changes every year.

Where the animal describes temperament, the year element describes climate — the tone of the times. A Metal year (like 1990) tends toward order, structure, and precision. A Fire year (like 2026) tends toward passion, visibility, and sudden change. A Water year flows and adapts. A Wood year grows and expands. An Earth year stabilizes and grounds.

A Metal Horse and a Fire Horse share the same core instinct (the horse), but they express it very differently because the year's element shaped the world they were born into.

◐ Polarity (Yang / Yin)

Each year is either Yang (active, outward, masculine-coded) or Yin (receptive, inward, feminine-coded). Polarity alternates with every year of the ten-stem cycle.

Yang years produce decisive action, visible movements, and assertive energy. Yin years produce reflection, subtle shifts, and quiet consolidation. At the collective level, Yang years tend to make headlines; Yin years tend to make slow, deep change that's only recognized in hindsight.

◆ Fixed Element

Every animal also has a fixed element — the element it always carries, no matter what year it appears in. This is the animal's permanent nature. Horse is always Fire. Rat is always Water. Ox is always Earth. Rabbit is always Wood, and so on.

The fixed element describes the core fuel of the sign — the element that animates it from within. It never changes across generations. A Horse born in 1990 and a Horse born in 2050 both carry the same inner fire, even if the years themselves feel completely different.

✺ Why 60 Years?

Twelve animals combined with five elements produces sixty unique combinations — the full cycle of the Chinese zodiac. This is why the same full sign (like "Yang Metal Horse") only repeats every sixty years.

The 60-year cycle is the master rhythm of Chinese cosmology. Historically, entire empires were said to rise and fall within it. Traditional practitioners track the cycle the way Westerners track decades — as a way of understanding the tone of an era.

⚠ A Note on Dates

The Chinese New Year does not fall on January 1st. It begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice, which lands somewhere between late January and mid-February, shifting every year.

If you were born in January or the first half of February, you likely belong to the previous year's animal. For example, someone born January 15, 1990 is actually an Earth Snake (1989), not a Metal Horse (1990). This calculator uses the year only, so cross-check your sign if your birthday falls in that window.
